Sports betting on the rise, but poker still leads the UK gaming sector

A new report undertaken by the market research company IBIS World has shown that sports betting is rising fast within the highly competitive UK gambling sector, growing at a faster rate than competitors such as horse racing, slot machine games and lotteries.
At present, sports betting is still only responsible for a relatively small percentage of the total revenue brought in by gaming, with 1.6%,
well behind poker games, but its current rate of expansion is likely to see this change. This also goes for other casino games available
on sites like luckynugget.

IBIS World indicates that the there are a number of contributory factors accounting for the rise of sports betting within the marketplace, including better product promotions targeted to the major sports events like the NRL and AFL matches, greater accessibility – via the internet and mobile devices, and greater cultural acceptance of betting on sports events. Indeed Sally Gainsbury, of Southern Cross University’s centre for gambling, education and research has argued that the link between the two has become normalised in the minds
of the public in UK.

“There’s been so much marketing it has allowed online gambling companies to really target sporting events and sporting fans. So now
on TV when you see someone score a try in the corner of a field, there’s a Centrebet post that they are knocking over,” she stated.

However, despite the inroads into the market being made by sports betting, the IBIS paper shows that poker remains by far the biggest source of revenue for the gaming industry in UK, expected to account for 60.2% total amount of gambling expenditure by the public this year. The increasing popularity of online casino sites, which provide poker tournaments, alongside blackjack, roulette and slots games, is seen as a big contributory factor in the ongoing market dominance of poker.

The report shows that the UK gaming industry as a whole is set to remain extremely healthy, despite the recession, with revenue of approximately $22.5 billion predicted for 2012.

Within one year of learning to play poker, the aptly named Chris Moneymaker became the 2003 World Series Of Poker (WSOP)
No-Limit Texas Hold 'em champion and won $2 million.

Actress Jennifer Tilly won a World Series of Poker bracelet and $158,625 in the 2005 Ladies' No-Limit Texas Hold 'em event,
outlasting 600 other players.

Writer and TV presenter, Victoria Coren, collected GBP 500,000 prize money when she won the 2006 European Poker Tour held
at the Victoria casino in London.

Dane Peter Eastgate, aged 22, become the youngest ever winner of the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) when he won the top prize
of $9.1 million in the 2008 event held in Las Vegas.

In his first major poker competition, Will Fry of Nottingham won the top prize of EUROS 595,839 when he beat 531 other players in
the 2008 Poker Stars European Tour held in Budapest.

Former banker James Bord won GBP 836,00 when he became the first British winner of the 2010 World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Europe event held in London.
